Celebrating Seollal in Korea : Lunar New Year

Happy Lunar New Year!

Seollal (Lunar New Year; first day of the lunar calendar) is one of the most celebrated national holidays in Korea. While many observe Sinjeong (Solar New Year; January 1 of the Gregorian/Western calendar), most Koreans celebrate Seollal, which usually lasts for three days (the day of, the day before, and the day after). This year, Seollal falls on January 28 of the Gregorian calendar.

Traditionally, families gather from all over Korea at the house of their oldest male relative to pay their respects to both ancestors and elders. The centerpiece of the holiday is the ritual of ancestor worship, but there are other activities including eating together, playing games and “Sebae" where children and students bow to their elders and receive small gifts of money.

This is "Hangwa"(traditional sweets and cookies) that we gave to our patients.
